The Sierra Leone Navy (SLN) was officially established in 1981 as a branch of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF). Initially, it began with a small team consisting of three officers who had undergone naval training, along with 40 ratings drawn from various technical units of the Army. They were tasked with operating the Navy's first patrol boat, the TRACKER MK II.

Before the formation of the Navy, the military structure in Sierra Leone underwent several changes. The armed forces were originally known as the Royal Sierra Leone Military Force and were renamed the Republic of Sierra Leone Military Force (RSLMF) in 1971 when Sierra Leone became a republic. The Navy was created as a separate entity in 1979, reflecting the growing need for maritime security and naval capabilities.

The Sierra Leone Navy plays a crucial role in safeguarding the country's maritime interests, which include protecting its territorial waters and ensuring the security of its coastal areas. The Navy's establishment marked a significant step in the development of Sierra Leone's military capabilities, allowing for a more comprehensive defense strategy that includes naval operations.
